Bathford is a caring, nurturing and happy church school, where we aim to provide a life-enhancing, outstanding education for every child through our vision of Grow, Care, Serve, Share. We help our children grow by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and values they need both to make sense of the world and to become caring, responsible global citizens. Working in partnership with parents, we nurture and celebrate each individual child, supporting them to develop a positive self-image and self-story. Through our creative curriculum, we inspire children to learn and make learning irresistible. Our children develop a shared connection to each other, to our local community, to the natural world and to the wider world.
Why we're raising money
Play Equipment and Outdoor Project
Help us bring our children's designs to life!
At the Bathford Church School AGM in October 2019 we showcased some ambitious plans for the outdoor spaces around the school, including the longstanding pond project. These plans were to introduce more variety to the play space, to create more innovative and imaginative areas to explore and to define and enhance the outdoor classroom spaces. These plans had to be put on hold in 2020 but now we are ready to begin the phased delivery of these works.
You will have noticed that the wooden castle structure has been out if use since Easter. Unfortunately, following our annual health and safety check, we determined that the castle was no longer safe for use and that the tyres and small wooden play structures adjacent to the birdcage walk entrance were also coming to the end of their life.
We now have a really exciting opportunity to create some new and improved play structures for the children. We have commissioned an experienced timber specialist (Bigwoodplay) who have designed and built play equipment at various primary schools and playparks across Bath and Wiltshire. As it is the children who will be using this equipment, it is vital that we include their voice in the design. Bigwoodplay have said 'whatever they can imagine, we can build'.
On June 23rd Dr Kate Langham ran workshops with small groups of children from years 3 through to 6 to design these play areas using techniques that she has developed through her PhD. Cake models were translated into scaled drawings that allow the children to see their ideas as design proposals. Younger children or those not lucky enough to be chosen to participate in the workshops, still had the opportunity to share their designs through sketches and discussion. This is a huge opportunity for the children to see their designs come to life. Bigwoodplay will then build something truly bespoke for our school over the summer holidays.
FOBS has kindly offered to help support our vision and capital funds will be used too. However, in order to do all that we want for the outdoor spaces we still need an additional £10,000 of funds and so we are appealing to you, our wonderful school community and friends, to help us raise these funds.
This would provide:
- New surfacing through the entrance from birdcage walk
- A new wooden stage and curved benching in front
- A structure/s to replace the trim trail
- A new large structure to replace the castle and tyres, including new surfacing
Additionally, the decking outside classrooms 5 and 6 needs replacing and we have decided to install a weatherproof covering to this area at the same time to enable all year round use of this space.
In the absence of any school fundraising opportunities over the past year, through cake sales, Christmas fairs etc, we are really hopeful that you will feel able to support our fundraising for the replacement playground equipment so that we can try to deliver this over the summer ready for September.
