About Us

We are a society dedicated to studying and researching the history of Southampton with particular reference to the City areas east of the River Itchen – Bitterne, Bitterne Park, Harefield, Itchen, Merry Oak, Midanbury, Peartree, Sholing, Thornhill, Townhill Park, Weston and Woolston.

We have a small Museum and Heritage Centre at 231 Peartree Avenue, SO19 7RD with a Charity Shop attached to help to fund the bills. Our Museum is free to enter and our Heritage Centre has a wealth of books, maps, photographs, directories newsletters of various local groups and schools going back many years. On weekday afternoons there is a Steward on duty to help you with your research.

We hold monthly meetings with a guest speaker and publish 'Bygone Bitterne' four times a year. We also publish local papers on topics of local interest and sell many local history books, both in the shop and online.

Why we're raising money

We are raising funds so that we can continue to operate our Museum and Heritage Centre.
