About Us

Ride and Stride is our annual fundraising event for Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust [OHCT]

When a historic church in Oxfordshire is wanting to improve its building for access, community use or repair the building to keep it in use, then they usually turn to OHCT to help fund that project.

Ride and Stride is a great day out.

As a family, it is a chance to explore some of the church buildings around you and raise funds for them. Plan a route, find some sponsors, pack a picnic and go.

Why not get a group of you together and form a team. Walk, cycle or do something more creative. Plan a route, find some sponsors and enjoy the day out with friends by visiting some amazing local community buildings.

Or maybe this is the chance to find some space for yourself and go for a walk or cycle to enjoy the fresh air, the space to breathe and, of course, visit some amazing churches that have been the place of reflection for centuries.

Why we're raising money

Ride and Stride's unique approach means that any funds raised can be split 50-50 between your local church and OHCT.

There is no limit on how much you raise. There are no restrictions on what your local church chooses to do with their 50%.

The 50% that goes to OHCT will be used exclusively on funding grants for local churches within Oxfordshire.

On our website, you'll find a paper sponsor form if that is helpful. You'll also find a route planner and all kinds of information to make this a great day out.

St Helens Dry Sandford Ride & Stride 2022

We are raising money to support our well-loved church of St. Helen's Dry Sandford which has been partially closed and awaiting enough funding to secure the walls and re-open the nave. Then we'll have our church back! We ride as a group each year raising awareness and funds to support the restoration of all our lovely churches and chapels in Oxfordshire that contain our history, our architecture and our sacred spaces. Please help us keep our churches and St Helen's Dry Sandford alive and open for future generations!

Oxfordshire Ride and Stride 2022

Please sponsor my Oxfordshire swansong. Alison and I move to Bristol in August to be closer to children and grandchildren but on 10 September I will be back in Charlbury where I am helping with the mass bike rally for local children round Charlbury’s five churches. I founded this six years ago and I am delighted that it has now been taken over by the Town Council. It will again be followed by a ‘bikefest’ on the school playing field with a bike gymkhana for the children, e-bikes for grown-ups to try and a mass picnic - weather permitting of course! The rally will still be part of the annual sponsored Ride and Stride across the county which raises money and awareness for the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust. I will again be cycling round as many churches as I can but will have to do so in the days before and after the 10th since my bike will be in Bristol by then, and my ride will have to be there and in Somerset. I hope to beat last year’s record of visiting 26 churches. There are certainly plenty in Bristol - and even more hills than the Cotswolds! The picture is of the rally start last year. This year we are adding a ‘Ten Mile Challenge’ for older children. OHCT gives grants to help maintain churches and chapels across Oxfordshire. Particularly in small rural parishes congregations are less and less able to find the necessary resources themselves. Many have lost much of their income because of the pandemic, while wind and weather have continued to take their toll on the fabric of these ancient buildings. Unless we can help we risk losing a very significant part of our heritage. Please give generously. It is a very good cause.
