Paxton Academy Sport and Science is a primary school in Thornton Heath which is part of the Wandle Learning Trust.
Why we're raising money
Our children and their families have been significantly impacted by Covid-19 over the last year financially, socially, physically and emotionally, and the latest lockdown has come at a time when many families have not yet recovered from the impact of the last 10 months.
50% of Paxton's students live in households that can be described as within the top 25% most deprived in the UK (94% are within the top 50% most deprived in the UK) and 65% are in receipt of Free School Meals. Many were living on the breadline before Covid-19 struck - but now they are in far worse positions. Parents have lost their jobs, food and utility bills have increased with the children at home all day, every day and many students, especially those with SEN (which is 14% of the student population), are struggling with a lack of stimulation, expertise and equipment that would normally offer them assistance with their learning. Although schooling is being offered to vulnerable children, many are frightened to take this up and put themselves at risk of the virus.
We continue to remain in regular contact with all of our families, and know their needs very well. We are helping many to access help from the government and other agencies and we have invested in eBooks to enable children to access reading online, and, but in many cases we need to do much more. We have several families that require urgent assistance to help them through the next months to ensure that their children have access to food, sanitation, warmth and education. We are raising funds to provide bespoke support to those families that need it, this will be by providing:
- Food vouchers for local supermarkets that can be used in store or online for families who are not eligible for Free School Meals but in need of support to feed their children.
- Internet access to enable better access to remote learning
- Support in paying utility bills
- Specialist equipment and therapy services for SEN students
- Resources and crafts to enable the students to progress in their learning while at home.
We are hoping that those families that CAN HELP will donate to help us provide for the families that NEED HELP.
Any funds that are left over will be utilised for students in need when the school returns.
Please help if you can!
